Chapter Eleven

"Some of these are really good, Lee-Lee.” Hal stared at the pictures strewn across the floor, watching Leann pick out a bunch of prints to show her agent.

"Thanks, babe.” She smiled up at him for a moment, hoping he was talking about the pictures she'd taken in the park, or at the jazz club Hal had taken her to a few nights back. Maybe even the artsy cemetery shots she'd taken on her own last week. Those were the kinds of pictures she'd had in her one disastrous show. Black and white architectural pieces that were admittedly as pretentious as they were expensive. Hal followed trends. Maybe that stuff was coming back into style.

No such luck. He was looking at pictures of Shreve and of the tattooed guy with the white hair. Strangely enough, Hal had left all the pictures of Ryan on the floor. Leann wondered if that was telling, or if it was just coincidence.

"You're welcome.” He was looking at her with this weird sparkle in his eye, one she would say was sexual, but not one she really recognized. He'd been pretty turned on that one time he'd watched with her. Maybe he was just in a remembering kind of mood.

They'd been spending a lot of time together lately, Hal being a gentleman and never mentioning that she was getting laid because she was on the rebound from some kind of freaky relationship she'd never even had. That still made her eyes bug out, too, so she wouldn't blame him if he brought it up eight hundred times a day, but he didn't.

He'd been working out, too. She could tell it from the way his six-pack was getting all cut again. Leann decided to find that flattering.

They were just seeing each other in a whole new light, which was kind of cool, and did a lot to make up for the fact that Ryan had never set up that lunch.

"So are you going to give any of these to Sandy?"

Hal had helped with that, too, setting up a meeting with her former agent, urging them to touch base. Sandy had always thought Hal was a hottie, liking him way more than she'd liked to promote Leann's work.

"Not those, no,” Leann replied. “I don't have permission from the subjects."

"Well, shit, honey, they just live across the way. Ask. They owe you—"

"What? They don't owe me a damned thing.” If it came to finger pointing, Leann knew she was right at the middle of the mess. She's started it, and she'd done it by taking naked pictures of people without their knowledge. Shaky moral ground.

"Well, what about this guy?” Hal handed over a picture of the tattooed guy, graphically spread, hair flowing back.

"I never asked."

"Well, maybe you should."

There was something in Hal's voice, something that matched the look in his eye.

"What are you trying to tell me, babe?” She wasn't up for games. He just needed to say it outright.

"Well, I've been thinking, ever since I was here with you, watching them.
